Planning & Itineraries

Q: Why should I hire a travel planner instead of doing it myself?
A: Japan is a wonderful but complex destination. We save you dozens of hours of research and use our local expertise to find “hidden gem” spots that aren’t always on English-speaking blogs.

Q: How far in advance should I start planning?
A: For popular seasons like Cherry Blossom (March/April) or Autumn Leaves (November), we recommend starting 10–12 months in advance to secure the best hotels and restaurants.

Q: I’ve already booked my flights; can you still help me?

A: Absolutely! We welcome travelers at any stage of their journey. If you’ve just locked in a great flight deal and now need a custom itinerary to bring your trip to life, we’d love to help you build it.

Booking & Reservations

Q: Why should I use your booking service instead of doing it myself?
A: Many of the best restaurants and activities in Japan don’t have English websites or online booking systems. We handle the phone calls and Japanese-language forms for you, ensuring your name is on the list at those “hard-to-get” spots.

Q: How do I know my booking is confirmed?
A: Once we’ve successfully secured your reservation with the venue, we will send you a formal confirmation email with all the details you need to show at the door.

Fees & Payments

Q: Does your service fee include the cost of the meal or activity?
A: No, our booking fee is a professional service charge for our time and expertise in securing the reservation. You will still be responsible for paying the venue directly for your meal or activity.

Q: What happens to my fee if I need to cancel?
A: Our booking fee is non-refundable once the work of securing the reservation has been completed. If you need to change a confirmed booking, an additional service fee ($15 per re-booking/cancellation) will apply to cover the extra coordination with the venue.

Practical Japanese Tips

Q: What if I’m running late for my reservation?
A: Punctuality is very important in Japan. Being more than 15 minutes late can often mean losing your table or being charged a “no-show” fee. If you’re running late, please let us know immediately through your Local Friend in Your Pocket service(Booking in advance essential)!

Q: Why was there an extra charge on my bill (Otoshi)?
A: In Japanese Izakayas, it is traditional to serve a small, seasonal snack (Otoshi) as a “table fee”. This is not a “tourist trap”—it’s a local custom that replaces the need for tipping.

Q: What is the “Service Charge” at the register?
A: In more formal restaurants, hotels, or Ryokans, you may see a service charge of 10–15% added to your final bill.

Q: Is Japan still a cash-based society?
A: While credit cards are now common in big cities, many smaller shops, rural shrines, and traditional ryokans are still cash-only. We always recommend carrying yen for peace of mind.

Traveler's Japanese Lesson

Q: I only have time for one lesson. Is it really worth it?
A: Absolutely! Mastering just some phrases completely changes how locals interact with you. It shows respect and often leads to much warmer hospitality.

Q: What if I need to miss my scheduled lesson?
A: We offer a one-time free reschedule with 24 hours’ notice. If you can’t make it to our face-to-face venue, we can simply hop on Zoom so you don’t miss out.

The Little Extras (Booking & Support)

Q: Can you help me in an emergency?
A: For life-threatening or legal emergencies, you must dial 110 (Police) or 119 (Ambulance/Fire). However, we can assist with communication and “what to do next” once the proper authorities have been notified. (Booking ‘Local Friend in your Pocket’ service in advance essential.)

Seasonal Recommendations

Q: Which seazon is the best for Weather & Scenery?

A: Spring is famous for cherry blossoms (sakura), and autumn for vibrant red and gold foliage (koyo). Both have mild temperatures and lower humidity.

Q: When is the best for Budget & Fewer Crowds?

A: Late January and February are the cheapest and quietest months. June (rainy season) is another good option for lower prices and fewer tourists at major sites.
